On The Issues
Let's make our kids healthier by bringing back recess, introducing healthier foods into schools, and encouraging physical activities such as running clubs. Lynn initiated a county wide "Hillsborough Healthy School" standard so each school is motivated to advocate for not only physical fitness, but mental, social, and emotional wellness.
Our children need more support to overcome problems they may face in school, in the home, and in the world.
Here are some initiatives being done:
1. Dropout Prevention and Trauma School training for teachers from the National Dropout Prevention Center, led by Dr. Addis.
2. I have supported "The Leader in Me" in each school; a student leadership program which teaches children to become mentors and leaders.
3. Lynn has pushed the nationally recognized behavior management USF program called PBIS - Positive Behavior Support Systems. This program sets up rewards when students practice good choices for themselves, their peers, their teachers, and the staff.
Let's improve the reading level of our children by fostering a love of reading and learning from a young age. Reading is one of the most important skills for a student's success in life! Lynn has recently finished part-time teaching of reading skills to Sulphur Springs K-8 Community School. Lynn has promoted immediate literacy programs prior to Pre-K; with an emphasis on both literacy and numeracy. "We have a reading crisis" in our schools.
Lynn Gray has been a teacher for 26 years and has served as a department head for many of those years. Her instructional and administrative experience includes 2 years as an instructor in Pasco County and 16 years as an instructor and department head in the Hillsborough County Public Schools, 9 years of instruction and department head at Jesuit High School, and 3 years as a part time adjunct instructor for JMJ (Jesus, Mary and Joseph) of Tampa Bay Homeschooling.
